Following a mission trip, Thom Hord felt lead to help people right in his own community of Johnson County, Indiana. Through investigation it became apparent, many churches did not have the resources independently to develop and run a food pantry. As a result of consultation, prayer, and planning, several churches came together to support bringing the vision of The Refuge to reality. This vision ultimately demonstrates coming together as a body of Christ; to serve more efficiently with what God has blessed us with.
Since 2007, The Refuge has been part of the community of Johnson County. Over time, we have changed locations and adjusted our ministries but never changed the mission of what we believe in. The pantry is our foundation to meet the physical need and will continue be used to serve the community. While facing many pivotal times since opening the staff and board have always felt we can build on this foundation to do more within the community. We continue to look for opportunities.
